Come annaffiare il mughetto?
di lettura
May 1st is approaching. Are you dreaming of a garden or balcony filled with little white bells and their unforgettable fragrance?
A symbol of happiness and good luck, lily of the valley is nevertheless a demanding plant. Too little water, and it will not flower; too much, and it will rot. The secret to spectacular flowering lies in careful watering.
How can you care for your "Our Lady's Tears" so they are ready for the big day? Follow this guide.
1. The golden rule: Moist, not waterlogged
Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) is a woodland plant. In the wild, it grows in the shade of trees, in soil that stays cool and moist but never waterlogged.
The ideal watering schedule?
- During the growing season (April): Water 2 times a week in dry weather. The soil should remain slightly damp to the touch.
- After flowering (June): Reduce watering to 1 time a week. The leaves need to stay green to replenish the rhizome's reserves for the following year.
The subtle beauty of rose gold
Lily of the valley flowers are fragile. A powerful jet of water can knock them over or damage them. A watering can with a fine spout lets you apply water gently at the base of the plant.
- 🌸 Aesthetics: Its rosy hue sets off the tender green of lily of the valley.
- 🎯 Precision: Ideal for reaching between the broad leaves.
- 💧 Rust-resistant: A durable tool for many springs to come.

2. How do you water like a pro?
⏰ The right time
Always water early in the morning or late in the evening. Avoid full sun (even if the lily of the valley is in the shade) to limit evaporation.
🚿 The right method
Use a watering can rather than a garden hose. A hose often delivers water that is too cold and too forceful. A watering can allows the water to reach a milder temperature and gives you full control over the flow.
💦 The plant mister tip (for indoor plants)
If you grow your lily of the valley in a pot indoors (to make it bloom earlier), the dry air of the house is its number one enemy.
Lily of the valley leaves love to be misted. This removes dust (which blocks light) and recreates the humid atmosphere of woodland.

Dew at your fingertips
Give your lily of the valley its daily dose of freshness.
- ✨ Fine Mist: Hydrates without soaking the soil (prevents rot).
- 💎 Genuine Brass: A work of art to keep on the living room table.
3. Growing lily of the valley: A quick guide
For beautiful flowers on May 1st, preparation starts the previous autumn!
- When to plant? From October to March, when there is no frost.
- Where? In shade or partial shade. Lily of the valley dislikes scorching sun.
- How? Plant the "pips" (rhizomes) just below the surface. The bud tip should barely protrude above the soil.
- The secret: Add leaf mould or well-rotted compost when planting. Lily of the valley needs plenty of nutrients!
Warning: Lily of the valley is a toxic plant if ingested (red berries, vase water). Wash your hands after handling and keep it out of reach of young children and curious cats.
