Come annaffiare correttamente una stella di Natale

di lettura

The poinsettia is a star of the festive season. With its bright red bracts, this Christmas plant brightens our living rooms in December.

But the festive display is often short-lived: the leaves turn yellow, dry out and fall off as early as January. Why? Because this tropical plant hates two things: cold and too much water.

How can you keep your poinsettia looking beautiful until spring? Here is what to do.

Red poinsettia Christmas plant

1. The golden rule: never use cold water!

The poinsettia comes from Mexico and is sensitive to cold. Watering it with ice-cold tap water in winter is sure to cause temperature shock and leaf drop.

Tip: Always use lukewarm water (around 20°C). Fill your watering can and let it sit near a radiator for a few hours before watering.

2. When and how to water

The poinsettia likes its roots to stay cool, but not to sit in water. Wait until the surface of the potting mix feels dry before watering.

  • The fatal mistake: Leaving water in the saucer or decorative outer pot, often wrapped in shiny florist foil. Always empty out excess water 20 minutes after watering.
  • Technique: Water gently at the base of the plant without wetting the coloured leaves, as this causes marks.

3. The secret to survival: humidity

Indoor heating dries out the air in winter. This is deadly for a tropical plant.

If your poinsettia's leaves dry out and fall off while the soil is still moist, the air is too dry.

4. Yellow or limp leaves? Diagnosing the problem

Diagnosing poinsettia watering problems
  • Yellow leaves falling off: Too much water or a cold draught. Let the soil dry out and move the plant away from open windows.
  • Limp, drooping leaves: Not enough water. Water immediately, using lukewarm water!
  • Lower leaves falling off: The air is too dry. Get out the plant mister!

Make the magic last

With a little care and the right tools, your poinsettia can survive well beyond Epiphany. Take good care of it!
