Come annaffiare una yucca?

di lettura

Known as the "waterless plant" or the student's tree, the yucca is a champion of survival.

Native to the hot deserts of Central America (Mexico, Guatemala), it is used to extreme conditions. It is an ideal plant if you do not have green fingers or travel often.

Yet many yuccas end up in the bin with soft trunks and yellow leaves. The cause? Too much love (and too much water). Here is how to keep yours alive for years.

Giant Yucca in its natural habitat in Mexico

1. When to water (less is more)

The yucca stores water in its thick trunk, so it has reserves of its own.

  • Spring / Summer: Water every 10 to 15 days. Let the potting mix dry out to a depth of several centimetres between waterings.
  • Autumn / Winter: Water very sparingly! Once a month is more than enough. The plant is dormant and takes up very little water.

The foolproof test: Push your finger 3-4 cm into the soil. If you feel any moisture, do not water. Wait until it is dry as dust.

2. How to water effectively

When it is time to water, do not hold back. In the desert, rain is rare but heavy.

Water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes to reach all the roots. Then be sure to empty the saucer. If the roots sit in leftover water, the trunk will rot from the inside.

A watering can for larger plants

A yucca is often a large floor-standing plant. To water it thoroughly without repeated trips to refill, you need a watering can with a generous capacity.

  • 💧 1.5L capacity: Perfect for thoroughly soaking the root ball of a large yucca.
  • ✨ Stainless steel design: Sturdy and elegant, it looks good beside your tree.

3. Why do leaf tips dry out?

If the leaf tips turn brown and dry, a lack of water at the roots is not the cause (do not add more water!).

It is a sign that the air is too dry. This is very common in winter because of electric heating. Yuccas tolerate dry soil but appreciate some humidity to keep their foliage green.

The "green leaves" solution

Rather than watering the soil and risking rot, mist the foliage!

  • ☁️ Targeted moisture: Prevents the leaf tips from drying out.
  • 🛡️ Dust removal: Cleans the leaves for better photosynthesis.

4. Yucca SOS: unmistakable warning signs

Healthy indoor Yucca
  • Yellow, soft leaves: Too much water! You are drowning the plant. Stop watering and let it dry out for 3 weeks.
  • A trunk that feels soft: Root rot. It is often too late. Try taking a cutting from the healthy top.
  • Lower leaves drying out and falling off: This is normal. As the yucca grows, it sheds its old leaves to form its trunk.

In Summary

The yucca is a tough plant. The best care you can give it is to leave it alone a little.

Water infrequently but thoroughly, and give it a light misting from time to time.
