Come annaffiare un'orchidea

Come annaffiare un’orchidea?

di lettura

Orchids (Phalaenopsis) are often described as temperamental divas. You give one as a gift in full bloom, and two months later, all that remains is a dry stem in a pot.

Yet an orchid is a robust plant... if you stop treating it like a geranium. Its secret? It does not grow in soil: it grows attached to trees!

Forget everything you know about conventional watering. Here is how to keep your orchid flowering for years.

1. Get to know your orchid: the secret of its roots

In its natural tropical habitat, the orchid is an epiphyte. It grows attached to branches, with its roots exposed to the air, taking up rainwater as it trickles down and absorbing moisture from the air.

Its roots are covered with a special membrane (the velamen) that acts like a highly absorbent sponge.

The consequence: If you suffocate these roots in ordinary potting soil or leave them standing in water, they will rot within a few days.

2. When should you water? Check the colour!

Do not throw away the clear plastic pot! It is your guide to watering.

  • Green roots: The plant is hydrated. Do not water it!
  • Grey / silver roots: The sponge is dry. It is time to water.

3. The best method: soaking

Forget watering from above with a watering can. The water flows through too quickly and does not soak into the bark.

The technique:

  1. Fill an outer pot or basin with water (ideally soft water).
  2. Immerse the plastic pot for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Remove the pot and let it drain completely.
  4. Put it back in place. No water should remain at the bottom.

4. An essential step: misting

Orchids often have "aerial roots" that grow out of the pot. These seek moisture from the air. In our dry homes, they eventually dry out.

The solution: Mist the aerial roots and the undersides of the leaves in the morning. This recreates tropical mist.

An essential tool for orchids

An ultra-fine mist is needed to hydrate the aerial roots without wetting the crown of the plant, which risks causing rot.

5. STOP! Never use ice cubes!

A tip is circulating on the internet: “Put two ice cubes per week on the roots”.

This is a very bad idea. An orchid is a tropical plant. It hates the cold. Ice-cold water causes thermal shock that can kill the roots instantly.

Watering orchids with ice cubes: danger

Always use water at room temperature (and, if possible, soft water, such as rainwater or filtered water).

6. Orchid SOS: yellow leaves

If the leaves turn yellow and become soft, the plant is not thirsty... it is often drowning!

Yellow orchid leaves: overwatering

Remove the plant from its pot, cut off any rotten roots (brown and soft) with disinfected scissors, and repot it in fresh specialist orchid potting mix.

An alternative to soaking

If your pot is too heavy to move to the sink, you can water from above, but you need absolute precision to avoid wetting the crown of the plant.

  • 🎯 Long spout: Directs water straight onto the bark.
  • ✨ Copper-coloured stainless steel: A safe, durable tool.

Est ce le pot doit être immerger complètement ou juste à hauteur du pot
