Come annaffiare un bonsai?
di lettura
It's every Bonsai owner's nightmare: coming home in the evening to find their tree with withered leaves.
The Bonsai lives in a tiny pot with very little soil. It has no reserves. Watering is not a chore, it's a matter of daily survival.
Don't panic. With the right techniques and tools, keeping a Bonsai alive is within everyone's reach. Here's the survival guide.

1. When to water? Forget the calendar!
Never say "I water every other day." That's the best way to kill your tree.
Water a bonsai when it's thirsty. Its needs change according to the wind, sun, or room temperature.
The Golden Rule: The Finger Test
Touch the soil. If it's still moist or cool, don't water (risk of root rot). If the surface is dry and pale, it's time!
In summer, it can be twice a day. In winter, every 3 days. Observation is key.

2. How to water: a fine shower
Bonsai substrate is often granular (Akadama, pozzolana). If you pour water too forcefully from a bottle, you will make holes in the soil and expose the roots.
Aim to imitate a gentle rain. The water should soak in gently without disturbing the soil. Keep watering until it flows out through the drainage holes.

3. Which tool should you use?
The Japanese tradition (copper)
Japanese masters traditionally use long-spouted copper watering cans. They allow pinpoint precision and deliver an extremely fine shower.

The modern alternative (professional-grade plastic)
Copper requires maintenance and is expensive. For enthusiasts, there are modern versions made of high-density plastic, fitted with the same fine watering roses, but lighter and more affordable.

4. Going on holiday: the drip irrigation solution
Going away for 4 days? Your Bonsai might die. Its pot is too small to store water.
If you don't have a neighbour who can water your bonsai, fit a drip irrigation system to a bottle. This keeps the soil consistently moist without waterlogging the roots.

Care for your living art
Caring for a bonsai is demanding, but so rewarding. With the right watering can, it becomes a pleasure.
