Come riparare un annaffiatoio in plastica?
di lettura
It is a gardener's nightmare: spring returns, you fill your trusty watering can and... your shoes get soaked. Frost or sunlight has taken its toll on the plastic.
Should you throw it away straight away? Not necessarily! Before buying a new one, let us try to rescue it.
Cracks, holes or dents: here are 3 professional techniques to extend the life of your watering can.

1. Repairing a crack: the "bandage" method
Cold makes plastic brittle. Even a small crack can grow under water pressure.
What you need: Waterproof sealing tape, such as roofing or plumbing tape. Ordinary sticky tape will peel off as soon as it gets damp.
- Sand: Lightly roughen the area around the crack with sandpaper to help the adhesive stick.
- Clean: The area must be completely dry and free of grease.
- Apply: Stick the tape to both the inside AND the outside of the watering can. Warm it gently with a hairdryer to activate the adhesive.
2. Filling a hole: the "grafting" method
If a piece of plastic has chipped off, tape won't be enough. The gap needs to be filled.
- Option A (epoxy adhesive): Use a two-part epoxy putty (resin + hardener). It is like modelling clay that sets as hard as stone and resists water. Fill the hole from the inside.
- Option B (melting plastic — caution!): If you are handy at DIY, you can melt a spare piece of plastic (a bottle cap) over the hole using a soldering iron. Warning: Do this outdoors while wearing a mask; plastic fumes are toxic.
3. Removing a dent: the hot-water method
Has your watering can been knocked and dented? This is the easiest problem to fix, thanks to the "shape memory" of plastic.
The tip: Fill the watering can with very hot water (not boiling, to avoid melting the seals). The heat will soften the plastic. Push the dent out from the inside with a broom handle: the can will instantly return to its original shape!
4. When rescue attempts are no longer enough...
If the plastic has turned white and crumbles under your fingernail, it has been damaged by UV rays. No repair will last.
It is time to invest in something sturdy. A good garden watering can should not be a disposable item that needs replacing every year.
An investment that lasts
Why does the Parisian watering can last for decades? Because it is designed differently.
- 🛡️ Thick plastic: High density for impact resistance.
- ☀️ UV-treated: Does not become brittle in sunlight.
- 🌧️ Sturdy watering rose: Designed not to leak.

One last step for the planet
If your old watering can is beyond repair, do not throw it in the general waste bin. Put it in the recycling bin (rigid plastic) or turn it into an unusual flower pot by drilling a hole in the bottom!
