How to Water Lily of the Valley?

of reading

May 1st is approaching and you dream of seeing your garden or balcony covered with small white bells with an unforgettable fragrance?

A symbol of happiness and good fortune, lily of the valley is nonetheless a capricious plant. If it lacks water, it won't bloom. If it gets too much, it rots. The secret to spectacular flowering lies in controlled watering .

How to take care of your "tears of Our Lady" so that they are ready on the big day? Follow the guide.

1. The Golden Rule: Coolness but not Flooding

Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) is an undergrowth plant. In nature, it grows in the shade of trees, in soil that remains cool but never waterlogged.

The ideal rhythm?

  • During the growing season (April): Water twice a week if the weather is dry. The soil should remain slightly moist to the touch.
  • After flowering (June): Reduce watering to once a week. The leaves must remain green to replenish the rhizome's reserves for the following year.

The Softness of Rose Gold

Lily of the valley flowers are fragile. Too strong a jet of water can bend or damage them. You need a watering can with a fine spout to gently place the water at the base of the plant.

  • 🌸 Aesthetics: Its pinkish hue enhances the soft green of the lily of the valley.
  • 🎯 Precision: Ideal for squeezing between large leaves.
  • 💧 Stainless steel: A durable tool for many springs.

2. How to water like a pro?

⏰ The right time

Always water early in the morning or late in the evening . Avoid full sun (even if the lily of the valley is in the shade) to limit evaporation.

🚿 The right method

Use a watering can rather than a hose. Hoses often deliver water that is too cold and too forceful. A watering can allows the water to warm up and gives you complete control over the flow.

💦 The misting trick (Indoor use only)

If you are growing your lily of the valley in a pot indoors (to make it bloom earlier), the dry air of the house is its number 1 enemy.

Lily of the valley leaves love to be misted. This cleans the dust (which blocks the light) and recreates the humid atmosphere of the undergrowth.

3. Succeeding in your cultural education (In brief)

To have beautiful flowers on May 1st, everything is decided in the previous autumn!

  • When to plant? From October to March (when there is no frost).
  • Where? In the shade or partial shade. Lily of the valley hates the scorching sun.
  • How? Plant the "claws" (rhizomes) just below the surface. The tip of the bud should barely protrude from the soil.
  • The secret: Add leaf mold or well-decomposed compost when planting. Lily of the valley is a heavy feeder!

Caution: Lily of the valley is toxic if ingested (red berries, vase water). Wash your hands after handling and keep it out of reach of young children and curious cats.
