How to Water a Yucca?

of reading

It is called the "waterless plant" or the student's tree. The Yucca is the champion of survival.

Originating from the hot deserts of Central America (Mexico, Guatemala), it is accustomed to extreme conditions. It's the ideal plant if you don't have a green thumb or travel often.

Yet, many Yuccas end up in the trash, with soft trunks and yellow leaves. The cause? Too much love (and too much water). Here's how to keep it alive for years.

Giant Yucca in its natural habitat in Mexico

1. When to water? (Less is more)

The Yucca stores water in its thick trunk (the stem). It therefore has its own reserves.

  • Spring / Summer:Water every 10 to 15 days. The potting soil should dry several centimeters deep between waterings.
  • Autumn / Winter:Water very little! Once a month is more than enough. The plant is dormant, it hardly drinks anymore.

The infallible test:Push your finger 3-4 cm into the soil. If you feel any moisture, do not water. Wait until it's dry as dust.

2. How to water effectively?

When you decide to water, don't be shy. In the desert, it rarely rains, but when it does, it rains hard.

Water thoroughly until water comes out of the drainage holes. This hydrates all the roots. Then, absolutely empty the saucer. If the roots soak in residual water, the trunk will rot from the inside.

The watering can for large formats

The Yucca is often a large floor plant. To water it generously without making round trips, you need a good capacity.

  • 💧 Capacity 1.5L:Perfect for saturating the root ball of a large Yucca.
  • Stainless Steel Design:Sturdy and elegant, it looks beautiful placed at the foot of your tree.

3. Why do leaf tips dry out?

If you see the tips of the leaves turning brown and dry, it's not a lack of watering at the base (don't add more water!).

It's a sign thatthe air is too dry. This is very common in winter due to electric heating. Yucca tolerates soil dryness, but it appreciates a certain ambient humidity to keep its beautiful green foliage.

The "Green Leaves" solution

Instead of watering the soil (risk of rot), mist the foliage!

  • ☁️ Local Hydration:Prevents tip drying.
  • 🛡️ Anti-Dust: Cleans leaves for better photosynthesis.

4. SOS Yucca: The Unmistakable Signs

Healthy indoor Yucca
  • Yellow and soft leaves:Too much water! You are drowning the plant. Stop everything and let it dry for 3 weeks.
  • Soft trunk to the touch: Root rot. It's often too late. Try to root the healthy top.
  • Lower leaves that dry and fall off:It's normal. The Yucca grows and sheds its old leaves to form its trunk.

In Summary

The Yucca is a tough plant. The best care you can give it is to forget it a little.

Water rarely, but generously, and give it a little "spritz" of mist from time to time.
