How to water your Ficus?

of reading

The Ficus is the king of houseplants. Whether it's as big as a tree or as small as a bonsai, it instantly brings a touch of urban jungle to any living room.

But beware, beneath its robust appearance, it is very sensitive. A draft, an incorrect watering, and panic ensues: its leaves turn yellow and fall off.

Don't panic! Here's the ultimate guide to understanding, watering and growing your Ficus.

Ficus in interior decoration

1. How to water a Ficus without drowning it?

Ficus trees hate having their roots in water. Overwatering is the number one cause of their death (root rot).

The Golden Rule: Drying

Never water if the soil is still damp on the surface. Wait until the soil is dry to a depth of 2 to 3 centimeters .

  • Summer: Approximately once a week.
  • Winter: Space out watering (every 10 to 15 days).

The Method

Water generously to thoroughly moisten the root ball, but always empty the saucer after 10 minutes. Stagnant water is fatal.

The Living Room Watering Can

The Ficus tree often takes pride of place in the living room. It deserves an accessory that matches its elegance.

  • 🎯 Long Spout: For watering at the base without wetting the parquet floor.

2. The secret to beautiful leaves: Humidity

Native to the tropics, the Ficus suffers from the dry air in our homes (especially in winter with heating). If the leaves dry out and fall off, it's often due to a lack of humidity in the air.

The lifesaving tip: Mist the foliage once or twice a week. This cleans the dust (which blocks the light) and recreates its natural climate.

The indispensable ally

To prevent leaves from falling, misting is mandatory.

  • ☁️ Micro-mist: Hydrates without soaking.
  • 💎 Durable Brass: A jewel for your plants.

3. What type of Ficus do you have?

There are over 800 varieties! Here are the stars of our homes:

Ficus Elastica (Rubber)

Recognizable by its large, thick, glossy leaves. It is very robust.

The Ficus Lyrata (Lyre Fig Tree)

The Instagram star. Its huge, violin-shaped leaves are spectacular, but it is more demanding in terms of light.

The Ficus Ginseng (Bonsai)

With its large, exposed roots, it is the easiest bonsai to start with.

4. Why is my Ficus losing its leaves?

It's a classic tragedy. Here are the culprits:

  • Moving it: The Ficus hates being moved. Once it has found its place (bright but out of direct sunlight), don't move it again!
  • Drafts: Avoid areas near front doors or windows that are often opened.
  • Overwatering: Check that the roots are not sitting in water.

5. Did you know? A legendary plant

In nature, some Ficus trees (like the Banyan) are gigantic. Their aerial roots grow down from the branches to form new trunks, creating entire forests from a single tree!

A pollution-absorbing plant

According to NASA, the Ficus is one of the best plants for purifying indoor air. It absorbs formaldehyde (found in furniture and glues), xylene, and ammonia.

6. Repotting and Cuttings

To help it grow, repot your Ficus every 2 or 3 years in the spring, in a slightly larger pot. This is also the ideal time to take cuttings!

Go for it!

With light, moderate watering and good misting, your Ficus will be the ideal green companion for many years.
