How to Water a Bonsai Tree
of reading
It's every Bonsai owner's worst nightmare: coming home in the evening to find their tree with withered leaves.
The bonsai lives in a tiny pot with very little soil. It has no reserves. Watering isn't a chore; it's a matter of daily survival.
Don't panic. With the right techniques and tools, keeping a bonsai alive is within everyone's reach. Here's the survival guide.

1. When to water? Forget the calendar!
Never say "I water every two days." That's the best way to kill your tree.
A Bonsai is watered when it is thirsty . Its needs change depending on the wind, the sun or the room temperature.
The Golden Rule: The Finger Test
Touch the soil. If it's still damp or cool, don't water (risk of root rot). If the surface is dry and light-colored, it's time!
In summer, it can be twice a day. In winter, every 3 days. Observation is key.

2. How to water? The Fine Rain
Bonsai substrate is often granular (Akadama, pozzolana). If you pour water abruptly from a bottle, you will create holes and expose the roots.
You need to mimic a gentle rain . The water should penetrate slowly without disturbing the soil. Water until the water drains out of the drainage holes.

3. Which tool should I use?
The Japanese Heritage (Copper)
Japanese masters traditionally use long-necked copper watering cans. These allow for surgical precision and deliver a microscopic spray.

The Modern Alternative (Professional Plastic)
Copper requires maintenance and is expensive. For enthusiasts, there are modern versions made of high-density plastic, equipped with the same fine watering "heads," but lighter and more economical.

The Special Bonsai Watering Can
Look no further. Our Japanese plastic model is specifically designed to avoid damaging the substrate thanks to its thin head.

4. The dangers of vacation: The drip-by-drip solution
Are you going away for four days? Your bonsai tree might die. Its pot is too small to hold water.
If you don't have a neighbor to water your plants, install a drip irrigation system on a bottle. This ensures constant moisture without drowning the roots.
