Cleaning an Old Watering Can
of reading
Old objects made of copper , tin and brass bear witness to ancestral and timeless know-how in metalworking. Their quality of design makes them very resistant tools that are passed down from generation to generation.
It is then necessary to take care of them, by polishing them from time to time, so that they keep their resplendent appearance.
Have you just gotten your hands on such a watering can? That's great! We tested two cleaning methods using natural, everyday ingredients. Good news: the simpler one turned out to be more effective!
Before cleaning:
Before any intervention on our part, the Watering Can was marked by numerous spots of rust and corrosion. Years of dust had also dulled its appearance, obscuring its beautiful reflections.
The Lemon + Salt Method:
Here's Grandma's method that worked perfectly for us!
- Squeeze half a lemon
- Add a pinch of coarse salt
- Mix until the salt dissolves
- Soak a cloth and rub!
- Rinse with Vinegar
The Result:
Starting to rub a little...
Once finished!
Thanks to these two ingredients we obtain a Pink & Golden tone depending on the lighting :)
This method was enough for us to achieve stunning results! However, there is a second method if you don't get such good results!
The Egg, Flour, Salt, Lemon Method:
This method involves adding a few ingredients compared to the first.
So let’s go through all these steps together:
- Press half a lemon
- Add a pinch of coarse salt
- Add the white of an egg
- Add a spoonful of flour
- Mix until the salt dissolves and a paste forms
- Rub with the cloth!
- Rinse with Vinegar
