Protecting Plants with a Cloche Greenhouse
of reading
Are you tired of seeing your young lettuces devoured by slugs? Or worried that late frost will kill your basil seedlings?
There is an ancient, simple, and ecological solution: The Garden Cloche.
Much more than a simple lid, it's a true individual mini-greenhouse that boosts growth and acts as armor against pests. Discover how to master this essential garden tool.
1. What is a plant cloche?
Used since the 19th century by Parisian market gardeners (in the form of heavy and fragile glass), the modern cloche has become democratized.
Today made of thick and transparent plastic, it is unbreakable and easy to handle. Its purpose is to create amicroclimate around a single plant.

2. Why use cloches in the garden?
A) The Greenhouse Effect (Gain 3 weeks)
This is its primary function: "forcing." By capturing the sun's rays, the bell warms the soil and the indoor air.
Result:You can plant your tomatoes, melons, or salads much earlier in the season, without waiting for the Ice Saints.
B) The Pest-Repellent Armor
It's the ultimate mechanical protection. Under its bell, your salad is inaccessible to:
- 🐌 Slugs and snails.
- 🐦 Greedy birds.
- 🌧️ Hail and heavy rains.
It's the best alternative to chemical slug repellents.
C) Winter Protection
In winter, it protects against icy wind and maintains a temperature slightly above zero around the plant, often saving perennial aromatics (thyme, parsley).

3. How to properly use your cloche?
Warning, a poorly used cloche can cook your plant!
- Aeration is Vital:As soon as the sun hits, the temperature inside rises very quickly. Open the vents or lift the bell with a small stone during the day.
- The Watering:Rain does not pass through the bell! You must check the humidity regularly.

The Humidity Tip: The Mister
Under a cloche, the atmosphere must be tropical (warm and humid). To water a fragile young shoot without drowning it and maintain this humidity, use a mister through the ventilation opening.

The ally of your seedlings
Ideal for humidifying the inside of the bell without disturbing the seedling soil.

Do you have many plants and a small budget?
The "Bottle" Method (DIY)
Cut the bottom off a 5L water bottle. Keep the cap to manage aeration. It's less aesthetic and less wind-stable than a real cloche (you need to plant a stake to hold it), but it's a good makeshift solution!

The Winter Fleece
If the plant is too large for a cloche (like a small lemon tree or a laurel), use a winter fleece. It acts like a breathable coat.
